The LOFT Appoints New Executive Director
March 1, 2009

The board of directors of The LOFT, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Services Center of the Lower Hudson Valley has appointed David Juhren as its new executive director. Juhren not only brings years of non-profit and management experience to the position, but has demonstrated commitment to the LGBT community. Juhren has been a consultant to The LOFT during the past 12 months, working as the marketing and communications director. In that role, he helped manage the redesign of The LOFT's e-newsletter, web site, print publications, and marketing materials. He was also key in producing the community center's 25th Anniversary Jubilee celebration.

"David's professional background in non-profit administration and his knowledge of LGBT issues make him a great asset for The LOFT," says Jean Marie Angelo, president of The LOFT. "In David we have someone with the enthusiasm and experience to fulfill our mission and enhance our efforts. We are looking forward to expanding our advocacy and equal rights efforts in this important year for the LGBT community."

Juhren’s career began in Washington D.C. within the International Monetary Fund’s public affairs department. He later moved back to his native New York to oversee communications and publications for a non-profit organization in the motion picture and broadcasting industries. His duties, though, extended into membership development, corporate sponsorship, and event planning.

Says Juhren, “The LOFT, as one of the oldest LGBT centers in the country, has been a mainstay for the LGBT community in the Lower Hudson Valley, and I’m honored and delighted to have been selected.” Juhren's consulting work for The LOFT has also included streamlining membership procedures, and revenue-building through special events. “This is going to be a pivotal year for The LOFT, and on top of relocating to a wonderful new space, we’re working on adding more services and programs that will further augment The LOFT’s ability to meet the needs of its constituents.”

The LOFT has been well served by Interim Executive Director Scott Havelka, who is excited to be returning to his role as Director of Programs and Services, and getting back to growing The LOFT's Silver Connections senior LGBT program, as well as expanding programmatic activities.

"Having worked with Scott for several months," Juhren adds, "I can definitely say he brings a wonderful sense of dedication, commitment, and effort--the organization has been in very good hands."

Juhren will continue efforts in streamlining policies and procedures, and applying best practices to the management of operating an LGBT Center. “The more we automate and make easier the administrative work of The LOFT’s staff, board members, and volunteers, the more time they’ll have to be innovative, and further enhance the types of quality programming The LOFT offers.”

A trained peer group facilitator, Juhren was a group leader at The LOFT’s Men’s Group for several years, and has written numerous articles on LGBT issues. He also appeared before regional legislatures on behalf of LGBT equality. Juhren sits on the Executive Committee of the Interfaith Task Force for LGBTQ Homeless Youth, and has been a consultant to a number of LGBT faith-based organizations. Juhren holds a degree in Government Administration from Mercy College, is a father of two, and lives with his partner, Michael, in Cold Spring.
